TRTE Overview

Name: The RealTime Enterprise Interest Group
Objective: To encourage the practical use of Internet technologies in Singapore companies in order to enhance business development within the region.
Targeted at: Companies with an interest in using the Internet to support their business processes. Open to all: End-user companies (having the actual business requirements), IT departments (tasked with implementation), ISVs (developing products), solution providers (providing system integration).
Meetings: Business and social networking, and group presentations
Resources: TRTE document library comprising:
  • TRTE IG independent studies
  • Any contributions from members
  • Links to relevant information e.g., standards, case studies
  • News on TRTE IG home page
Areas of Interest: Standards for Web Services:
  • Standards developed for Internet business are too complex.
  • Standards, and their attempted implementation, tried to accomplish too much.
  • Development has only been considered by MNC IT departments; the same as EDI. But it is generally acknowledged that the involvement of the mass-business market is essential.
  • There has been too little in the way of success stories and practical usage.
  • Standards are good, when they are workable, and when they are applicable. The IG's approach is: To track, analyze, promote, and apply standards (especially those based around XML).
Open Source Software (OSS):
  • Because the acquisition and implementation costs of both hardware and software can be prohibitive, can OSS act as a catalyst to spur growth in the use of the Internet for business?
  • The IG will track, analyze, and coordinate information relating to OSS technologies and highlight its use within enterprises.
Mobile Data/VoIP:
  • Will the advent of 3G help in the uptake of the use of the Internet in business (beyond its use as an eMail client)? For example in areas such as sales force automation, management information provision, and further.
  • Will the use of voice-over-IP technologies continue to act as an in-road for enterprises to adopt Internet-based technologies within their businesses?
Program:
  • Initially to build-up the profile of the IG; canvasing views of members and non-members.
  • To encourage Singapore companies to learn from others through case studies and business networking.

All IIAS members and non-members are encouraged to join the activities of this group. For further information on the Interest Group, or to get involved, contact the TRTE Interest Group Principal Contact: Christopher Harvey eMail
